WAGBO PEACE CENTER
The late Martha Wagbo bequeathed her Norwegian family homestead to be an education center focusing on peace and environmental stewardship. Located three miles south of East Jordan on M-66, the Wagbo Peace Center is now a nonprofit membership organization "modeling peaceable, sustainable living and teaching the related concepts of peace, nonviolence, environmental stewardship, and sustainable agriculture."
In 1994, a 10-year development plan was initiated, establishing four programming areas: Residential Experiential Education, Conferences and Retreats, Sustainable Agriculture and Building Community. Current offerings include the "Co-op Course," a group problem-solving experience, a folk music coffee house on the second Saturday of every month, community workshops, a hiking trail, a C.S.A. garden in which "shares" of organic produce are sold and distributed weekly through the summer, and a farming apprenticeship program using a mentoring approach to teach nonviolence to high-risk teens.
Wagbo Peace Center also produces maple syrup, eggs, chickens, custom-sawn lumber and firewood to help support its programs. Tours available by appointment. For information, call 231-536-0333.
